Some program areas’ tests are administered by ETS, the Educational Testing Service, and some programs areas’ tests are administered by Pearson. Information for both testing services appears below. No one will be recommended for licensure without passing test scores.

Tests Administered by ETS (Praxis Tests)

ETS supports the Praxis Subject Assessment tests typically required for secondary (6-12) licensure areas and K-12 programs, like Music Education, Reading Specialist, ESL, School Counselor, School Psychologist and Speech-Language Pathologist.

Preparing for the Tests

Application forms for the Praxis Subject Assessments and information booklets may be downloaded from the North Carolina Test Requirements page. Click on the links to individual tests on that page to access study companions and other test preparation materials that will help you understand the structure and content of the tests.

When registering for the tests, ensure that you choose UNC-Chapel Hill as a score recipient. Our institution code is 5816.

Accessing and Reporting Test Scores

Official score reports from ETS will be available online via your Praxis account approximately three to four weeks after the test date.

When completing the registration form, choose for your test results to be sent to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Paper copies are not mailed to candidates or the university, but are received electronically for reporting purposes. It is recommended that you print a hard copy of the score report, as well as save an e-copy for future reference.

If you did not choose UNC-Chapel Hill as a recipient, see Sending your Praxis Scores for more information about how to send score reports.

Scores for tests taken through ETS are available online and downloadable for one (1) year. After one year, scores will no longer be available and candidates will need to request additional score reports from ETS. NOTE: There is a fee for each request.

Tests Administered by Pearson

Pearson supports NC Foundations of Reading and General Curriculum tests typically required for Elementary Education and Special Education (K-12) licensure areas.

Preparing for the tests

The Pearson Education website lists information for prospective candidates, including test requirements, test dates and sites, preparation materials and alternative testing arrangements.

Accessing and reporting test scores

If you requested a score report email when you registered for the test, your score report will be emailed to you. Otherwise, your scores will be available in your account beginning at 10:00 p.m. eastern time on the score report date for your test date. See the Scores page to log into your account, for the score reporting schedule, and information about how to read your score and request score reports.

All test results should be sent to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Paper copies are not mailed to candidates or the university but are received electronically for reporting purposes. If requested, Pearson test results are emailed to individuals and are available online through an account for only 45 days. It is recommended that you print a hard copy of the score report, as well as save an e-copy for future reference. Additional score reports are available from Pearson. NOTE: There is a fee for each request. See Request a Copy of Your Score Report for more information about how to send score reports.
