Teaching Fellows application deadline tonight

Students who wish to join the inaugural cohort of the new N.C. Teaching Fellows program are urged to submit applications ahead of the Jan. 16 deadline. The Teaching Fellows program offers forgivable loans up to $8,250 per year for students who commit to work as teachers. More details about the program, including a link to the application.

Two SOE alumni named N.C. Regional Teachers of the Year

Two School of Education graduates are among the nine educators selected as N.C. Regional Teachers of the Year. Being named for the honor were Lisa Wall (A.B.Ed. ’92), an English teacher at Burke Middle College in Morganton, and Julie Pittman (A.B.Ed. ’02), an English teacher at R-S Central High School in Rutherfordton. Wall and Pittman will compete for the title of 2018 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year. The winner will succeed the 2017 N.C. Teacher of the Year, Lisa Godwin, another School of Education alumna.

Eric Houck appears on ‘Education Matters’ interview program

Eric Houck, associate professor of educational leadership and policy, was a guest on this weekend's "Education Matters," an interview program that explores education topics. Houck and other guests discussed school funding in North Carolina. Houck recently wrote a column for The News & Observer, advocating that North Carolina legislators and policymakers move forward with revamping the formula used to fund schools.

Lori Edmonds elected to TESOL International Association committee

Faculty member Lori Edmonds has been elected to the Nominating Committee of the TESOL International Association for 2018-2019. TESOL International Association is an association of professionals from around the world advancing the quality of English language teaching through professional development, research, standards, and advocacy.

GSA hosting conference and symposium Feb. 3

The School of Education’s Graduate Student Association is hosting its 2018 Graduate Research Conference and Symposium on Feb. 3. The event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs to 12:30 p.m., will feature graduate student work. The theme for the event is “Education as Infrastructure.” More details are here.

CAEP Formative Feedback Report available online

In preparation for the CAEP re-accreditation visit next month, the Formative Feedback Report for the “Selected Improvement Pathway” is available online for review. The report is posted on the UNC Assessment and Accreditation resource page, where you may also find a blog with information and updates about the upcoming visit and other resources. School hosting informational sessions for prospective students

The School of Education is hosting a series of informational sessions for prospective students in during the next few weeks. Two of the sessions – a Jan. 24 session for undergraduates and a Jan. 25 session for prospective graduate students – will be held at Peabody Hall. Other sessions are online. Publications, presentations, etc.

Sherick Hughes has had his book "Autoethnography: Process, Product, and Possibility for Critical Social Research" published, by Sage Publishing. The book provides an introduction to the tools and concepts of autoethnography and guidance for how to use the concepts and practices. More about the book is here.
