Courses

Of course, Teaching Fellows are able to participate in the rich curriculum and wide variety of extra-curricular activities available to all UNC-CH students. In addition, we offer courses for Teaching Fellows. The curriculum is designed to assist prospective teachers develop broad perspectives on the contexts of schooling and on teaching as a profession in a period of redefinition.

First Year

**All students at UNC-CH (including Teaching Fellows) interested in teaching high school are required to enroll in a 5th year M.A.T. program to earn a licensure for secondary education.

Beyond our curriculum, we offer a variety of required and voluntary activities. Our staff and student-run Teaching Fellows Congress plans educational and social activities such as:

  • First year students: Homecoming Barbecue, Ropes course, Recruitment Day
  • Seniors: Senior Dinner
  • All Teaching Fellows:
    • Crossing Cultural Barriers
    • Fall Football Tail Gate Party
    • Halloween Party
    • Spring Semi-Formal
    • Caroling at UNC Hospital
    • Annual Let's Talk Race Conference

The Public School Forum sponsors a series of activities for Teaching fellows starting before students begin their first year and continuing until senior year:

  • First Year Orientation:
    • ½ day conference
    • Meet peers & Director
  • Discovery: 7 day trip through NC schools & communities (For rising sophomores)
  • Junior Enrichment: 1-6 weeks Variety of activities from Outward Bound to travel to NYC & Abroad (For rising juniors)
  • Junior Conference: 3-4 days Focus on cultural diversity & inclusive teaching environments (For rising juniors)
  • Senior Orientation: 1 week Experience with a school system (For rising seniors)
  • Senior Conference: 3-4 days Focus on Critical Education issues (For rising seniors)
