North Carolina Residency for Tuition Purposes
NOTE: Only students affiliated with academic programs* that are administered through the School of Education should apply via the instructions and deadlines on this page. Students affiliated with programs administered through The Graduate School should visit The Graduate School for residency information.
*Academic programs administered by the School of Education: M.Ed. for Experienced Teachers, Master of School Administration, Ed.D. Curriculum and Instruction, Ed.D. Educational Leadership and all non-degree programs.
To claim North Carolina residency for tuition purposes you must reside in the state of North Carolina for at least one year prior to the first term for which you are applying. Please visit the UNC-Chapel Hill residency manual for a more in depth look at the residency process.
Residency Application
Please read the following guidelines on paper applications. Faxed applications are not accepted. Electronic applications are only available for programs administered by The Graduate School.

Short Residency Form
If you have lived in the state of North Carolina for 3 years or longer by the first day of classes of the term for which you are applying, complete the Short Residency Form (PDF) . If additional information is needed, we will notify you by mail. If you or your spouse are not US citizens, complete the Supplemental Form (PDF) in addition to the Short Residency Form. (PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT SUPPLEMENTAL FORM WITHOUT SHORT RESIDENCY FORM).
Long Residency Form
If you have lived in the state of North Carolina fewer than three years but greater than one year by the first day of classes of the term for which you are applying, complete the Long Residency Form (PDF) . If you or your spouse are not US citizens, complete the Supplemental Form (PDF) in addition to the Long Residency Form. (PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT SUPPLEMENTAL FORM WITHOUT LONG RESIDENCY FORM).
Spousal Supplemental Form
If you are a married student, you may benefit from your spouse's duration of residence. Complete the Spousal Supplemental Form (PDF).
Military Applicants, Spouses or Dependents
If you are a Military Applicant, Spouse or Dependent, complete the Application for Military Tuition Benefit (PDF) along with either the Long Residency Form (NC resident for fewer than three years) or Short Residency Form (NC resident for 3 or more years) depending on which criteria applies to you (follow guidelines for Long and Short Residency Forms to determine which one you should complete.)
North Carolina Teachers
If you are a North Carolina teacher, complete the Teacher's Tuition Benefit Form (PDF) along with either the Long Residency Form (NC resident for fewer than three years) or Short Residency Form (NC resident for 3 or more years) depending on which criteria applies to you (follow guidelines for Long and Short Residency Forms to determine which one you should complete.)

| Fall 2007 | Assuming the pilot program is approved, the filing period for residence status for Fall 2007 will begin on March 15, 2007 and end on Monday, August 27, 2007. |
| Spring 2008 | The filing period for residence status for Spring 2008 will begin on September 15, 2007 and end on Tuesday, Jan 15, 2008. |
| Summer I 2008 | Submit no earlier than December 15, 2008, no later than June 17, 2008 (last day of exams of exams for that term) |
| Summer II 2008 | Submit no earlier than January 23, 2008 , no later than June 25, 2008 (last day of exams of exams for that term) |
| Military Benefit | Submit no earlier than 30 days prior to the term for which you are applying, but no later than the day before classes start for the same term |
| Teacher Benefit | Submit no earlier than 30 days prior to the term for which you are applying, but no later than the 1st day of classes of that term |
