Application Instructions for Current UNC Chapel Hill Undergraduate Students

These instructions are for admission into the HDFS, UNC BEST, Music Education and Minor in Education programs.

DO NOT APPLY OR FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED AT UNC CHAPEL HILL AS AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT

Applicants can apply during any one of the advertised application deadlines each year.

Incomplete Applications

School of Education application deadlines are strict. All application materials must be received by the application deadline. Applications that are incomplete after the deadline will NOT be reviewed for admission.

Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)

Minimum Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 to apply to the HDFS program in the School of Education. Students who do not currently have a 2.5 gpa should wait until the next term they do have a 2.5 to submit an application.

Application Materials

To apply to the HDFS major, you must first request a major change within Connect Carolina.

Once you have submitted the request to change your major in ConnectCarolina, you will receive an email from the Slate application system that includes a link to the online application. Please note that it may take 24-72 hours to receive the application email.

All application materials are submitted electronically. No hard copy materials are accepted. By submitting an application to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education, consent is granted to university staff to obtain any additional or missing information as needed, including Campus Safety Information.

Submit your application as soon as you have completed your portions of the application pages as rolling admissions are made monthly until a full class has been admitted.

Letters of recommendation to this program are optional. If you would like to list a recommender inside the application, you can do so. For letters to be considered as a part of your application, they must be received by the deadline.

Essay on Commitment to Children and Families

Please provide a 1 page double-spaced essay describing your commitment to child and family services. You can highlight your beliefs and attitudes toward serving children and families from diverse backgrounds and your future goals

The committee will be interested in both volunteer experiences and those required as part of a program. For extra-curricular activities at UNC-Chapel Hill, describe any special roles you have fulfilled, such as being an officer or heading a committee. Some of this information could be included in either the essay or the resume.

Resume/Work Experiences

A standard resume is not required for all applications. Please be sure to include your experiences working with children, jobs, volunteer efforts, and extra-curricular activities, along with the duration of each experience inside the application in the Work/Volunteer Experiences portion of the application.

The committee will be interested in both volunteer experiences and those required as part of a program. For extra-curricular activities at UNC-Chapel Hill, describe any special roles you have fulfilled, such as being an officer or heading a committee. Minimum Undergraduate Admission Requirements

The 2.7 GPA entrance requirement is mandated by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and is not negotiable. If you do not have a 2.7 GPA at the time of your application but there is a strong possibility that you may have a 2.7 GPA before you would enter the School of Education please contact Audrey Fulton at abfulton@email.unc.edu to discuss your specific situation and the likelihood that you will or will not be able to enter the School of Education.

Passing Exam Scores

Passing scores on the PRAXIS I OR PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators or alternative exams are required for admission to the School of Education. Please consult the following list to see if you have an exemption from taking the PRAXIS tests or any portion.

If you do not fall into one of the categories below, you may still submit your application, but you MUST take and pass all three sections of the PRAXIS I or the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators to be considered eligible for admission. Please designate UNC Chapel Hill (RA5816) as a recipient of your scores when you register. All test scores must be received by the application deadline.

  • If your SAT Mathematics score is 550 or higher, you are exempt from the Mathematics portion of PRAXIS.
  • f you SAT Reading score is 550 or higher, you are exempt from taking the Reading and Writing portions of PRAXIS.
  • Individuals with a total SAT score of 1100 (SAT Mathematics and SAT Reading sections), are exempt from taking PRAXIS.
  • If your ACT Mathematics score is 24 or higher, you are exempt from the Mathematics portion of PRAXIS.
  • If your ACT English score is 24 or higher, you are exempt from the Reading and Writing portion of PRAXIS.

Individuals with a composite ACT score of 24 are exempt from taking PRAXIS

Personal Statement/Essay

Essay Prompts (please reply to each prompt in 500 words or less)
  • What motivates you to pursue teaching as a potential career?
  • What qualities do you possess that you believe will allow you to be an effective teacher for a diverse population of students?
  • Describe a specific experience from your life and discuss how that experience will influence your ability to support the achievement of a diverse populations of students.

Education Minor

The Minor in Education can be declared by meeting with any academic advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences or with the Director of Advising and Undergraduate Student Engagement in the School of Education as soon as your first semester on campus. Formal application through the online application is no longer required.
