Personal Computer and Handheld Devices Policy

Given the increasing number of personal computers and handheld devices purchased by faculty and staff, the following guidelines have been developed and approved for the School of Education.

  1. Personal Computers
  2. The School of Education Technology Services cannot support personally purchased computers (i.e., desktops or laptops) even if these are used for University- or Department-related work.  These computers will be supported by the Information Technology Resource Center (ITRC) located at the Undergraduate Library. Of course, the School of Education Technology Services will continue to support departmentally-purchased laptops and desktops.

  3. Handheld Devices
  4. If you would like to receive support for the handheld device you have personally purchased, the following conditions must be met:

    • You must consult with Technology Services before purchasing the device to determine if the device can be supported and if the device will meet your needs.
    • Technology Services will only support the device on departmentally-owned desktops and laptops.
    • You must provide a timeline for the purchase and provide at least two (2) weeks notice before the device's arrival/setup. Technology Services will ask you to schedule a setup time to meet with one of our members for two hours. You must be present during this two hour setup. The meeting must occur in your Peabody Hall office or in the Technology Services' office. (It is important to note, Technology Services will not make a "house call" or offer after-hours support.)
    • With some devices, it may be necessary for Technology Services to work with your device. If this is the case, you will be asked to bring the device to the Technology Services' office on a predetermined date and time.
    • Because this is a personally-purchased item, Technology Services cannot support the device as an "Important" or "Critical" remedy ticket. Technology Services will treat any support for this device as a "General" request.
