Frequently Asked Questions
How do I access my H: Drive/AFS space?
Background Information
When you create your Onyen, you are allocated 100 MB (undergraduate students) or 256 MB (faculty, staff and graduate students) for combined file and web page storage. Your AFS space is very secure and is backed up nightly.
To access your AFS space from a campus computer
- Login with your Onyen (username and password).
- Double-click on the My Computer icon located on the desktop of your computer.

- Double-click on the Home on ‘afs’ (H:). This is the drive in which you can store your personal files. Instead of saving documents to a floppy disk or USB flash drive, you can navigate to this drive and save your documents here. You can then access any files saved to your afs space (H: Drive) from any campus computer.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since you gain access to your AFS space (H: Drive) by logging on to the campus computers using your Onyen (username and password), be sure to LOG OFF when you are finished using the computer so no one else can gain access to your afs space.
To SAVE a document to your afs space (H: Drive) from within an application
- From the File Menu, select “save as”.
- In the Save As window, click on the down-arrow next to the save in box and select “home on ‘afs’ (H:)” from the drop-down menu.

- Finally, enter your file name as you usually do and click the Save button.
- To view your saved file, you can either use the Open command from the File Menu within the application you are using, OR you can go to desktop view, double-click on the My Computer icon, and then double-click on the home on ‘asf’ (H:) icon to view a listing of your saved documents. You may also create folders in your AFS space for organizing your documents if you wish to do so.
NOTE: You will see files and folders in your AFS space that were placed there upon the creation of your email account. These folders and files must remain in your AFS space so that your account continues to function properly.
To MOVE a document from another location (i.e., disk, USB flash drive, my documents folder, etc.) to your afs space (H: Drive)
- Double-click on the My Computer icon located on the desktop of your computer.

- Double-click on the icon to open the window for location where your document was previously saved (i.e, disk, usb flash drive, my documents folder, etc.).
- Next, double-click on the home on ‘afs’ (H:) icon to open this window.
- Finally, drag the file from the previous location (in the example below, the file was previously saved to a USB flash drive) to your AFS window.

NOTE: Following this procedure will COPY the file to your AFS space, so the file will also remain in the original location.
