Bio

Patricia Mills Shane is associate director of the UNC-Chapel Hill Center for Mathematics and Science Education and a clinical professor of education. A former middle school teacher and counselor, she has also served as a central office coordinator for science, mathematics, language arts and reading. Shane's professional interests include improving science education, equity issues and professional development – especially how to recruit and retain science teachers and develop leadership skills for emerging science leaders.

Shane is active in service to professional organizations. She is currently the executive director of the North Carolina Science Leadership Association and is immediate past-president of the National Science Education Leadership Association. She is also the former president of the North Carolina Science Leadership Association and the North Carolina Science Teachers Association as well as a former district director for the National Science Teachers Association. Shane is the editor of five books on science leadership and science issues: Issues in Science Education; Professional Development: Planning and Design; Professional Development Leadership and the Diverse Learner; Science Teacher Retention: Mentoring and Renewal; and Teaching Science in the 21st Century. She is also the author of several articles in science education journals. During her career, Shane has received $2 million in grant funding for various projects.
