Bio

Duane Brown is a professor in the School Counseling Program in the School of Education. His concern about the haphazard way students choose their careers led to his longstanding professional interest in career choice and development.

Brown began his career as a vocational educator in Indiana and worked as field supervisor of guidance in the Indiana State Department of Education before beginning a series of professorships at Iowa State University, West Virginia University and, since 1973, at UNC-Chapel Hill. His goal from the outset of his professorial career was to be among the top 10 percent of his peers at the end of his career. “I’m still working on it,” he says.

Author or co-author of more than 100 publications including 24 books and inventory manuals, Brown has received numerous awards recognizing his professional contributions, most recently the National Career Development Association’s Eminent Career Award. For three years, he served as editor of Counselor Education and Supervision and has held various offices, including the presidencies of three North Carolina professional organizations and one national organization, the National Career Development Association.

Recently, Brown has focused his scholarship on developing a theory that accounts for the career choices of people from various ethnic and racial groups. He has become an advocate for career development services to disadvantaged and marginalized groups in our culture believing that effective career development services can help chip away at the economic disparities so prevalent in our society.
