Mindfulness in schools subject of Tuesday presentation

The value of using mindfulness in the classroom will be the subject of a presentation on Tuesday. Presenters from the organization Peaceful Schools will speak at the event, starting at 5 p.m. in Unks Lecture Hall (Room 104). All School of Education students are invited.

University ombuds to discuss ‘Moving Through Change’ on Wednesday

Dawn Osborne-Adams, University ombuds, will lead a conversation on Wednesday entitled “Moving Through Change and Challenge: Mindsets to Action.” The talk, open to all School of Education students, faculty and staff – will examine the value of “seeing the good,” being “real” and demonstrating a design thinking approach to problem solving. The event will run from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Peabody 02.

Trish Harris wins public service award

Trish Harris, the School’s director of recruitment, was honored last week as one of Carolina's recipients of the Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award. Harris received the staff award for her work in establishing the "EduConnections" program in which she works with students from underrepresented groups to cultivate their interest in becoming educators. She was among those being honored in a ceremony recognizing public service conducted by University faculty, staff and students.

Doctoral student Jordan McNeill wins fellowship

Jordan McNeill, a doctoral student in Applied Developmental Sciences and Special Education, has been selected to receive a Community Engagement Fellowship through the Carolina Center for Public Service. McNeill, with student collaborator Susan Szendrey in Allied Health Sciences, won the fellowship for their project, “Facilitating Access and Inclusion for Visitors with Disabilities at a Local Zoological Park.” In the project, McNeill and Szendrey are working with the Conservators Center zoological park in Mebane to facilitate development of supports and resources to improve the experiences of visitors who have disabilities.

Two MAT students win Fulbright awards

Two MAT students – David Sowers and Laura Wenzel – have won Fulbright awards to help support study-abroad projects. Sowers will work as an assistant teacher in a high school English classroom in the Galicia region of Spain from September 2019 to June 2020. Wenzel’s Fulbright will support her project in Taiwan.

Rebecca New attended the Biennial Society for Psychological Anthropology conference in New Mexico where she presented in a session “Honoring the Contributions of Carolyn Pope Edwards.” She was part of an open panel discussion with a presentation “Common Threads Across Wide Oceans: Interdisciplinary Collaborative Inquiry on Children, Families and Early Childhood.” She was also invited to a special gathering of the SPA and the Society for Research in Child Development to explore opportunities for greater cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Kalpana Venugopal a Fulbright Visiting Scholar who is a professor at the National Council of Educational Research and Training, which has authority for School and Teacher Education in India, presented “Early Childhood Education Programs – The Indian Perspective” at Pitt Community College on April 3. Venugopal initiated and coordinates the Early Childhood Education Program at the Regional Institute of Education at Mysore, working throughout India in the design and development of curriculum and programs for early childhood education.
