Doctoral student Robert Carr leads study describing importance of early high-quality teacher-child interactions

Doctoral student Robert Carr is the lead author on a recently published study that found that children who experience higher-quality classroom environments during pre-K and kindergarten have better language, literacy and math skills at the end of kindergarten. The study, published in Early Childhood Research Quarterly, found that higher-quality classroom environments in pre-K and kindergarten were both independently associated with children’s language and literacy skills. Carolina Student Council on Family Relations holding meeting today

The Carolina Student Council on Family Relations, a student affiliate of the National Council on Family Relations, is having its first meeting of the semester today from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Peabody 104. HDFS majors collaborate to promote the field of family studies and engage in activities to improve the well-being of children, youth, families, and communities. Recent projects include creating 500 greeting cards for patients in children’s hospitals, volunteering with family service organizations and co-hosting a film series with the HDFS program.

Webinar on Thursday to present overview of report on science learning

The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Mathematics will present a webinar on its recent study report “Science and Engineering for Grades 6-12: Investigation and Design at the Center.” The report, for which faculty member Eileen Parsons served on the expert panel, recommends ways to improve the teaching of science and engineering. The webinar will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. Register here.

Submission deadline extended to Friday for SEAES conference proposals

The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2019 Southeastern Association of Educational Studies (SEAES) conference has been extended to midnight on Friday, Feb. 1. The School of Education’s Graduate Student Association will host the conference March 1 and 2 in Peabody Hall with the theme “Student Safety and Well-Being: Shifting the Narratives.” Proposals may be submitted through this form. For questions, email seaes.unc@gmail.com. The link to register for the conference is now live. The registration deadline is Feb. 20.

Student applications sought for summer Outward Bound experience

School of Education students are invited to apply be awarded tuition for a 28-day outdoor adventure course with North Carolina Outward Bound this summer. Recipients receive full tuition for the course, which entails hiking, rock climbing and white water canoeing among other activities. As part of the course, students also receive Wilderness First Aid certification. Students who participate may also enroll in a 1-credit EDUC course in fall 2019. The summer 2019 course will take place July 1 – July 28. For more information, visit the NCOBS scholarship page or the NCOBS website. Application deadline is Feb. 4. Organization led by doctoral student Ronda Bullock holding ‘Let’s Talk Racism’ conference

A nonprofit established by doctoral student Ronda Bullock will hold its fourth annual Let’s Talk Racism Conference in March. The theme of this year’s conference, which is geared toward pre-service teachers, educators and anyone else interested, is “Moving Beyond Good Intentions.” John Diamond, co-author of “Despite the Best Intentions: How Racial Inequality Thrives in Good Schools,” will deliver the keynote address. The conference will take place at N.C. Central University on Saturday, March 23. Click here for registration information.
