Suzanne Gulledge using grant to incorporate makerspace work into seminar

Suzanne Gulledge has received a $5,000 Quality Enhancement Plan grant to incorporate design thinking and hands-on project-based learning in her first year seminar called "What's Schooling Got to Do With Getting an Education.” Gulledge is using the grant to incorporate projects conducted in the BeAM makerspaces on campus into the course, projects designed to show evidence of innovation, risk-taking and collaboration. Student projects from Gulledge’s class and from the projects pursued by the four other QEP grant recipients will be featured at a QEP Design Expo in April.

In the Media: EdWeek profiles Matthew Springer study on teacher retention bonuses

Education Week has profiled results from a study led by Matthew Springer examining the efficacy of retention bonuses used in Tennessee to retain high-performing teachers. The new study, accepted for publication by the journal Economics of Education Review, looked at a program in which some teachers working in high-need schools were offered one-time $5,000 bonuses. The study found that the bonuses did work – helping keep more high-performing teachers at work in the schools.

Video from Summit on Student Safety and Wellbeing available online

Video of the sessions held during the Summit on Student Safety and Wellbeing held last semester are now available online. The summit was co-sponsored by the School of Education and held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the Friday Center. Fifteen videos of plenary speakers and individual sessions are available in the Resources section on the Summit website. Click the “Event Photos and Videos” tab on the page to find a menu of the available videos.

Proposals sought for SEAES conference

The School of Education’s Graduate Student Association is calling for proposals for the 2019 Southeastern Association of Educational Studies (SEAES) conference. The conference, to be held March 1 and 2 in Peabody Hall, will have the theme “Student Safety and Well-Being: Shifting the Narratives.” Proposals are due Jan. 25. Proposals may be submitted through this form. For questions, email seaes.unc@gmail.com.
