Federal grant to support SOE student work regarding Latin America

A collaboration, supported by a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, will provide new opportunities for School of Education students to study issues involving Latin America and the Caribbean. The collaboration is between the School of Education and the Consortium for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University. It is intended to promote understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean among K-12 teachers and educators at community colleges and historically black colleges and universities across the state of North Carolina. As a part of the Title VI-funded work, SOE MAT Program Coordinator Kristin Papoi teamed up with UNC history professor Louis A. Pérez and Beatriz Muñiz from UNC’s Institute for the Study of the Americas to facilitate educational opportunities for students in the MAT and UNC-BEST programs in coordination with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. Other opportunities will include professional development workshops, summer institutes, and study tours developed for pre-service and in-service teachers.
