School hosting informational sessions this week for prospective students

The School of Education is hosting a series of informational sessions for prospective students this week. Two of the sessions – a session for undergraduates on Wednesday and a session for prospective graduate students on Thursday – will be held at Peabody Hall. Other sessions are online. GSA hosting conference and symposium Feb. 3

The School of Education’s Graduate Student Association is hosting its 2018 Graduate Research Conference and Symposium on Feb. 3. The event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs to 12:30 p.m., will feature graduate student work. The theme for the event is “Education as Infrastructure.” More details are here.

Education Policy Colloquium Series talk examines gender, race in school leadership

Peter Goff of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will be the guest speaker at the next Education Policy Colloquium Series event on Feb. 7. Goff’s talk is entitled “Pipeline problems or hiring hang ups: An analysis of gender and race/ethnicity in the school leadership labor market.” The talk will be held at noon in Peabody 02. Lunch will be provided.

SOE alumna named WRAL’s ‘Teacher of the Week’

Lauren Boening (A.B.Ed. ’10), a third-grade teacher at Morris Grove Elementary School near Chapel Hill, has been named WRAL’s “Teacher of the Week.” Watch the interview and hear Boening talk about why she loves teaching and working with third graders. She’s now in her eighth year teaching at Morris Grove.

SOE alumnus makes run on ‘Jeopardy!’

Lee Quinn (MAT, ’01), a history teacher at Broughton High School in Raleigh, made a run on the TV quiz show Jeopardy. Quinn was the champion two nights in a row last week, with his streak ending Friday. His total winnings: $44,800.
