Research writing subject of Wednesday grad student professional development session

Faculty members Jeff Greene and Thad Domina will present a professional education session for graduate students on Wednesday entitled: “Writing, Submitting and Revising Manuscripts.” The session is part of a series of educational sessions for graduate students. The session will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Peabody 02. Additional sessions will be held in the spring.

Thad Domina writes EdWeek column on collaborating with educators

Faculty member Thad Domina has published a post at Education Week “Engaging with Researchers: Three Thoughts for Educational Leaders.” In it, Domina looks at how do educational researchers better engage with educators in the field, and asks: How do educators in the field better engage with researchers? The post is here. It was written in response to an article by SOE alumnus Christopher Harrison (Ph.D. ’15): “Working Together: School District Leaders’ Advice to Ed. Researchers.”

RSVP today: Holiday party being held Friday

The School of Education’s faculty-staff holiday party will be held on Friday, and today at noon is the deadline for RSVPs. The party will begin at 2:30 p.m. and be held at the Great Room at the Top of the Hill restaurant. The event will also honor retirees Sharon Derry, Judith Meese and Sharon Glasgow. School Counseling online info session on Tuesday

Prospective students interested in the SOE’s School Counseling master’s degree program are invited to an online informational session being held Tuesday. In the session, faculty and recruitment staff will discuss how the M.Ed in School Counseling hones leadership skills and provides the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to become an effective school counselor. MEITE online info session being held on Thursday

Prospective students interested in the Master of Arts in Educational Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship may take part in an online informational session being held Thursday. The session will describe the MEITE program and answer questions about the application and admissions process. School to host Chris Dede talk on educational tech in February

The School of Education and MEITE program will host Chris Dede, the Timothy Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard University, in February to give a talk entitled "Designing Educational Innovations to Achieve Scale." Dede’s research is aimed at developing new types of educational systems. Dede is a leader in mobile learning initiatives and has developed a widely used framework for scaling up educational innovations. His talk will be hed on Feb. 20 at noon in Peabody 02.

Publications, presentations, etc.

A new book co-edited by four recent SOE doctoral students has been published. Possibilities in practice: Social justice teaching in the disciplines was co-edited by Summer Pennell, Ashley Boyd, Hillary Parkhouse and Alison LaGarry. It was published by Peter Lang. All four are working at universities across the country: Truman State University, Washington State University at Pullman, Virginia Commonwealth University, and UNC-Chapel Hill. The volume includes chapters by current SOE faculty and graduate students including: Ronda Taylor Bullock, Cherish Williams, Bryan Fede, Lana Minshew, Martinette Horner, Janice Anderson, and Brian Gibbs.
