School of Education selected for new Teaching Fellows program

The School of Education was one of five schools named last week to participate in a new North Carolina Teaching Fellows program aimed at supporting students preparing for a teaching career in the fields of science, technology, engineering, math or special education. The program was established to recruit, prepare and support students attending North Carolina's top education programs for preparation as highly effective STEM or special education teachers in the state's public schools. Students participating in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program will receive up to $8,250 per year in forgivable loans if they commit to teach in a STEM or a special education area. Dean Abd-El-Khalick named to governor’s education commission

Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, dean of the School of Education, was named by Gov. Roy Cooper on Wednesday to the Governor’s Commission on Access to Sound, Basic Education. The commission, created by Cooper through executive order, will focus on how North Carolina meets its duties as outlined in rulings from court cases that require the state to provide a “sound and basic” education to all students. The commission includes 18 members appointed by the Governor from the fields of education, business, government, law, health care, psychology and counseling, and public safety. Abd-El-Khalick serves as the higher education representative on the commission.

Doctoral student Eldrin Deas named New Leaders Council North Carolina Fellow

Eldrin Deas, a Ph.D. student in Cultural Studies and Literacies, has been selected as a 2018 New Leaders Council North Carolina Fellow. The New Leaders Council is a nonprofit organization that works to recruit, train and promote young progressive leaders ranging from elected officials and civically engaged leaders in business and industry. Fellows participate in a career and advancement program that includes leadership and professional development, and mentoring.

Doctoral student Eldrin Deas made a presentation last week at the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta titled "Educating the Whole Child: Building Ecosystems of Supports for Students and Families" as part of a forum entitled “Reimagine Education: Advancing Bold Solutions For Equity” hosted by the Southern Education Foundation.
