University hosting ‘Carolina Conversation’ on free speech Wednesday

The University will hold a public talk on Wednesday exploring questions around free speech as part of its “Carolina Conversations” series. The event – The First Amendment and Free Speech at UNC – will be held at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Room at Wilson Library. The discussion will explore what the First Amendment protects, what it does not protect, and how it applies in the setting of a public university. The event also will cover state laws and University policies that regulate First Amendment rights. Vice Chancellor and General Counsel Mark W. Merritt is the speaker. The event will be moderated by Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer Dr. G. Rumay Alexander. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend. More details here.

Abd-El-Khalick new book published

A new book co-edited by Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, dean of the School of Education, has been published by Routledge. The book, “Representations of Nature of Science in School Science Textbooks,” gathers international research on nature of science representations in elementary- to college-level textbooks. It also gives recommendations for future science textbooks. More about the book here.

Jeff Greene’s Richard Snow Award talk available online

Jeff Greene, associate professor of Learning Science and Psychological Studies, was presented the Richard E. Snow Award for Early Contributions from the American Psychological Association’s Division 15 last month. The award is given annually to an individual who has made what the committee judges consider to be a significant career contribution and completed his/her doctoral dissertation within the previous 10 years. As part of the recognition, Greene was invited to give a talk about his research. His address is now available online, here.

School hosting ‘Carolina Educational Leadership Summit’ Sept. 23

The School of Education will host a “Carolina Educational Leadership Summit next month, bringing together faculty researchers, school superintendents, legislators and policymakers, corporate and foundation representatives to discuss challenges in education. The event is designed to identify strengths from among represented groups that can be applied against challenges facing schools today. The event will be held on Sept. 23 at the FedEx Global Center.

Jeff Greene and graduate students Nikki Lobczowski and Kayley Lyons attended the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction conference in Tampere, Finland. With more than 2,000 members from more than 60 countries, EARLI is the largest educational association in Europe. Carolina SOE research presented at the conference included:
