Robert Martinez receives research award

Faculty member Robert Martinez has been awarded a Junior Faculty Research Award of $7,500 from Carolina’s Committee on Faculty Research and Scholarly Leaves. The award will support a new study investigating North Carolina Latino/a student’s postsecondary aspirations.

Doctoral student Nikki Lobczowski accepted into fellowship program

Nikki Lobczowski, a doctoral student in the Learning Sciences and Psychological Studies strand, has been accepted into Carolina’s Future Faculty Fellowship Program for the upcoming spring. The semester-long program, sponsored by UNC's Center for Faculty Excellence, introduces graduate students from various disciplines to best teaching practices at the collegiate level.

Keith Sawyer talks creativity in ‘Said Well’ podcast

Faculty member Keith Sawyer, in an interview on the UNC podcast “Said Well,” talks about creativity and how to nurture it. Sawyer makes the point that our society and our world faces many difficult and complex problems and that the solutions are going to be found in creative thinking. Take a listen here.

Doctoral student Terrell Morton featured in Carolina Hall video

Terrell Morton, doctoral student in the Learning Sciences and Psychological Studies strand, is featured in a UNC video describing a new history exhibit at the entrance of the renamed Carolina Hall. Morton was a member of the task force that was charged with creating an exhibit that conveyed the history of the building, its original naming after a Ku Klux Klan leader and its re-naming last year. Singers invited for caroling

Graduate Student Association President Abby Ampuja is inviting folks who are in town the week of Christmas to caroling for nursing home patients. The caroling will be at a local nursing home on Friday, Dec. 23, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friendly pets with vaccination records are also welcome. To sign up, email Ampuja at

John Wachen, Ph.D. student in Policy, Leadership and School Improvement, is lead author on a paper accepted for publication in Leadership and Policy in Schools. The paper, “Data Use as Instructional Reform: Exploring Educators’ Reports of Classroom Practice,” was written with Christopher Harrison (Ph.D. '15) and Lora Cohen-Vogel.
