Improving physics instruction focus of Oct. 19 SOE@Work lunchtime talk

The inaugural SOE@Work lunchtime talk on Oct. 19 will feature SOE faculty member Sherick Hughes, physics and astronomy faculty member Laurie McNeil and doctoral students Wenyang Sun, Jeremy Trad Godwin and Joseph Hooper talking about an effort to measure effectiveness of changes to physics instruction at Carolina. The presentation is entitled "Physics 2.0: Evaluating the Influence of Innovative Pedagogy on Two Entry-Level College Physics Courses." The SOE@Work talks will showcase collaborations in which our faculty and students are working with others across Carolina. The presentation begins at 12:30 p.m. Lunches will be provided.

Alumna Muriel Summers named Wake County Principal of the Year

Muriel Summers (A.B.Ed. ’79) has been named Wake County Public School System’s 2016-17 Principal of the Year. Summers is principal at Combs Elementary School in Raleigh, where she has served in that role since 1997. Summers has received national and worldwide recognition for her work in using Franklin Covey’s “7 Habits” program to establish Combs as the first leadership elementary school in the nation. Summers co-authored a book about the experience, “The Leader in Me,” a program that has been adopted by more than 3,000 schools in 50 countries around the world. By being named Wake County’s Principal of the Year, Summers enters the state’s Principal of the Year competition.

GSA hosting benefit concert Nov. 13

The Graduate Student Association is hosting a benefit concert next month to raise money for The Champ Foundation for research into a cure for Pearson Syndrome. Pearson Syndrome is a rare inherited disease that affects infants, causing anemia, liver disease and other problems. The event will feature four local bands and improvisational comedy. The concert will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Second Wind Café, 118 E. Main Street, in Carrboro. Tickets may be purchased online. For information, contact GSA President Abby Ampuja at abbya (AT)

Publications, presentations, etc.

Catherine Marshal presented at the Women in Educational Leadership Conference at Appalachian State University earlier this month. The research was in collaboration with doctoral student Torrie Edwards and Michelle Young and the paper was called “Representing Women in the Educational Leadership Curriculum.”
