Ryoo among eight NSF CAREER grant awardees at UNC

Kelly Ryoo, assistant professor of learning sciences, is one of eight Carolina faculty members who have won prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER grants this year. It’s the largest number of NSF CAREER grants ever won at Carolina. Ryoo’s five-year grant of $674,000 is being used to fund a research project in which she will work with 8th grade science teachers to improve their instruction for English language learners through the use of visualization technologies. Juan Carrillo has new book coming out

Faculty member Juan Carrillo has a new book coming out. “Barrio Nerds: Latino Males, Schooling, and the Beautiful Struggle” is based on Carrillo’s research on the schooling of Latino males. Carrillo is a native of the barrios of south Los Angeles and is the son of Mexican immigrants and has worked as a high school teacher and mentor to Latino youth. His dissertation, “So Far From Home: Portraits of Mexican-Origin Scholarship Boys,” was awarded the Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship for Research Related to Education.

Alumnus Todd LoFrese invited to participate in D.C. workshop

Alumnus Todd LoFrese (Ed.D ’14) has been invited to take part in a panel discussion at an event co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The two-day workshop is entitled “School Diversity in Action: Strategies for Increasing School Diversity and Fostering Equitable School Environments.” LoFrese is sssistant superintendent for support services for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. He was asked to take part in a panel discussion on student assignment and Chapel Hill-Carrboro’s approach with social workers, a topic that he explored in his doctoral dissertation.

In the media: Carolina Alumni Review profiles Abd-El-Khalick, McDiarmid

The Carolina Alumni Review, the magazine published by Carolina’s General Alumni Association, has published a package of stories about the School of Education, centered on interviews with Dean Fouad Abd-El-Khalick and former Dean Bill McDiarmid. The articles examine the challenges the School has faced in recent years and work the School has done to position itself for moving forward. The articles are in the September/October edition of the magazine. Online versions are available only to GAA members.

Leigh Hall blog post aims to help doctoral students consider online identities

Faculty member Leigh Hall has published an article on her blog that seeks to help doctoral students think about crafting “digital identities.” The post describes digital identities and why people should care about them. The blog post is available here.

Publications, presentations, etc.

Jeff Greene traveled to San Antonio, site of the 2017 AERA conference, as program chair for Division C to lead the meeting to determine the Division’s program for 2017. The meeting involved 11 scholars from across the country, working on roughly 900 submissions and 2,700 reviews.

Kathleen Brown presented at the Academic and Business Research Institute International Conference in Albuquerque last week, during one of the Education/Instructional Pedagogies sessions. The presentation was based on research on the Race-to-the-Top evaluation work with which she has been involved.
