Meghan Walter wins grant to support School Counseling program students

Meghan Walter, coordinator of the School Counseling program, has won a federal grant that will be used to support students in the program. The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded $228,000 as part of a program to help expand the country’s behavioral health workforce. The money will be used to provide $10,000 stipends to students in the School Counseling master’s degree program while they are working in their clinical internships. The grant will also support students to attend and present at the N.C. School Counselors Association conference, cover fees for the Praxis licensure exam, and other costs.

Lora Cohen-Vogel interviewed for PBS documentary

Lora Cohen-Vogel, the Robena and Walter E. Hussman, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Policy and Education Reform, traveled to Detroit earlier this month to sit for an interview for a Public Broadcasting System documentary on continuous improvement research. An expert on the approach, Cohen-Vogel spoke about her use of innovation prototyping and rapid cycle testing in her work with more than a dozen high schools in Florida.

SOE faculty, students participate in Annual Teacher Education Forum

Several School of Education faculty and students participated in the 34th Annual Teacher Education Forum of the N.C. Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators held last week in Raleigh. The following SOE faculty and students led presentations:

  • Cheryl Horton. Simulated Interaction Model of Secondary Preservice Teachers.

Alumnus Sandy Shugart to be honored by Carolina

Sanford “Sandy” Shugart, president of Valencia College in Orlando, Fla., will be honored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with its Distinguished Alumnus Award during University Day celebrations on Oct. 11. Shugart (B.S.S.T. ’78, M.A.T. ’83, Ph.D. ’89) has been president of Valencia College, one of the nation’s largest community colleges with approximately 70,000 students, since 1999. Under Sanford’s leadership, Valencia has become a national model for creating a culture of educational innovation. Read more here.

Publications, presentations, etc.

Policy, Leadership and School Improvement faculty members Lora Cohen-Vogel, who leads Division L of AERA, and Dana Thompson-Dorsey, travelled to the University of Virginia earlier this month to help build the Division’s program for the annual meeting next April. With eight other scholars from across the country, they culled through over 1,500 proposal reviews.
