School of Education holding Open Houses for MAT, UNC-BEST programs

The School of Education is hosting a pair of Open Houses this week, promoting the MAT and UNC-BEST programs. The MAT Open House will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Peabody 02. The UNC-BEST Open House will be held Thursday, also at 3:30 p.m. in Peabody 02.

RSVP for Friday’s faculty-staff picnic scheduled for Friday

RSVPs are due today for the School of Education’s welcome back picnic being held Friday afternoon. The picnic begins at 1 p.m. and runs until 4, and will be held at the Farm clubhouse at 1 Alice Ingram Circle, off of Barbee Chapel Road. The picnic will be catered by The Pig. RSVPs are due to Laurie Norman today: laurie_norman@unc.edu.

Graduate Student Association volunteer info session on Wednesday

The School of Education’s Graduate Student Association has arranged volunteer opportunities and will hold an informational session on them Wednesday. The GSA is partnering with the Compass Center for Domestic Violence, Calvin's Paws Animal Rescue Group, and Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools. Representatives from the three groups will attend an info session Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Peabody 02. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact GSA President Abby Ampuja.

In the Media: Alumna Kisha Daniels talks on WUNC about how to help children learn

Kisha Daniels (M.Ed. '92, M.S.A. '01, Ed.D. '05) was featured in an interview on WUNC-FM’s “The State of Things,” exploring ways in which parents and teachers can more effectively help children learn. Daniels has joined the organization Thinking Maps, where she is serving as director of consulting. In the interview, Daniels talks about critical thinking skills and ways in which educators and parents can help cultivate them. The interview may be found here.

Workshop on motivational design scheduled for Wednesday

The School of Education’s Master’s in Educational Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship is co-hosting a workshop for people interested in learning more about motivational design, also known as “gamification.” Phaedra Boinodiris, Global Lead Games at IBM and UNC-Chapel Hill's 2016 Social Entrepreneur in Residence will facilitate. Participants will learn best practices from the fields of healthcare, disaster response, and employee and consumer engagement and design a gamification architecture. The workshop is open to students, faculty and staff and the public. It will begin at 5 p.m. in the Anne Queen Lounge in the Campus Y. Other co-hosts are CUBE and Gillings School of Global Public Health. For more information and to register, click here.

Donate to the school supply drive runs through this week

The Graduate Student Association is holding a donation drive to collect school supplies to donate to local schools. A donation basket will be located in the graduate student lounge on the second floor of Peabody through Sept. 9.

Harriet Able was invited to serve on a National Panel at the U.S. Office of Education, Special Education Programs conference in August focused on the Family Engagement Policy issued by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Education in May. Able presented information regarding family engagement related to professional preparation.
