Fouad Abd-El-Khalick to be welcomed at Tuesday reception

A reception will be held by the University to welcome Fouad Abd-El-Khalick on Tuesday to welcome him as the new dean of the School of Education. The event, which will include remarks from Chancellor Carol Folt, Provost Jim Dean and Abd-El-Khalick, will be held at 1 p.m. in the Hill Ballroom South at the Carolina Inn.

Eric Houck featured in WRAL documentary airing Thursday

Eric Houck, associate professor of educational leadership and policy, is among those interviewed for a documentary airing on WRAL-TV on teacher salaries. The documentary – entitled – “Grading Teacher Pay” – will air Thursday at 7 p.m. on WRAL, WILM and online at It will be rebroadcast on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on WRAZ FOX-50. Through interviews with teachers, policymakers and others, the documentary examines the impact of teacher salary levels, their relationship to educational quality and debate over how much North Carolina public school teachers should be paid. ‘Change Project’ reception on Tuesday to recognize ECIFS graduates

A reception will be held Tuesday to celebrate 2016 graduates of the Early Childhood Intervention and Family Support program and to recognize their “Change Project” efforts. The students completed a range of projects from creating mobile pre-K classrooms for homeless families in Raleigh to setting up parent coaching and support programs for rural families in Head Start programs. The event is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at the Carolina Center for Educational Excellence. Students will have poster presentations about their projects, with light refreshments.

Doctoral student Summer Pennell wins dissertation award

Summer Pennell, a doctoral student in the Culture, Curriculum and Change program, has won an award for her dissertation from UNC’s Program in Sexuality Studies. Pennell will receive the program’s Graduate Student Research Award during the LGBTQ Center’s Lavender Graduation Ceremony on May 1, a ceremony held on many campuses around the country to honor LGBTQ students and the acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions to their universities. Pennell’s dissertation is entitled “Queering the Curriculum: Critical Literacy and Numeracy for Social Justice.”
