Dean candidate forums scheduled

Forums have been scheduled for the candidates for the deanship of the School of Education to give presentations to the School and University community. The finalists – Christopher Morphew (Feb. 8), Fouad Abd-El-Khalick (Feb. 10) and Carole Basile (Feb. 22) – will each will give a public hour long talk centered on these topics: “The vision for a School of Education, the challenges you see in higher education, your ideas about meeting those challenges and why you are prepared to do so.” More details about the candidates are here.

GSA holding Brown Bag on conferences on Wednesday

The Graduate Student Association will host its fourth GSA Brown Bag event of the academic year on Wednesday. The topic: “A guide to conferences and conference presentations.” Speakers include Janice Anderson, assistant professor of science education, Brooke Midkiff, postdoctoral research associate with the Finish Line Project, and Lana Minshew, Ph.D. student in learning sciences and psychological studies. The talk begins at 12:30 p.m. in Peabody 02. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided. All attendees will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $10 Starbucks gift card and a SOE T-shirt.

School holding Open House for Bachelor’s/MAT program on Thursday

The School of Education’s Bachelor’s/MAT program is holding an Open House on Thursday for Carolina students interested in the new program. The event will be held in Room 02, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The program is designed to allow an accelerate path to a master’s degree and is for prospective teachers of elementary grades, English, social studies, mathematics and science. Latin@ Education Research Hub opening with reception Feb. 24

A new initiative – the Latin@ Education Research Hub – will open in the School of Education later this month, directed by Assistant Professor Juan Carrillo. The hub will be organized around three core areas: public pedagogy, university-community/school partnerships, and critical Latin@ education research. The Hub will have a local, state and national focus, seeking to provide a leading role in Latin@ educations issues. An opening reception is planned for Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in Peabody 015.

Doctoral student Domonique Bulls selected as fellow

Domonique Bulls, a doctoral student in critical studies and literacies strand of the Ph.D. in education, has been selected as a 2016 Jhumki Basu Scholars Program fellow. She joins faculty member Kelly Ryoo, a previous recipient of the award, in this honor. The conference scholarships are awarded by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching to outstanding junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and advanced doctoral students conducting equity-focused research. Bulls is advised by Eileen Parsons, associate professor of science education.

Alumnus Ben Currin receives community college system award

Ben Currin (A.B.Ed. '59) has been selected to receive the highest honor bestowed by the N.C. Community College System, the I.E. Ready Award. Currin worked in education for more than 40 years, including 18 as president of Vance-Granville Community College. Details here.

GSA hosing 8th Bi-annual School of Education GSA Research Symposium

The GSA Research Symposium this year will take place on March 5 with the theme ”Believing in the Power of Change: New Approaches to Learning, Teaching, and Improving Schools.” The GSA Research Symposium provides a forum for graduate students, professors, alumni, and practitioners in the field of education to share knowledge and experience in a collegial conference environment. In keeping with this tradition, all individuals engaged in the study and research of education, regardless of specialty area, are invited to submit a proposal. The call for proposals is here. GSA holding Spring Formal

The GSA’s Spring Formal will be held April 1 at Hickory Tavern in Carrboro. The party begins at 6 p.m. Each ticket is $25 and includes two drinks. More details
