Deans for Impact visiting School of Education this week

Deans for Impact, a national group of education deans working to transform educator preparation and elevate the teaching profession, will meet at the School of Education this week, hosted by Dean Bill McDiarmid, a member of the group. The group meets, beginning Tuesday running through Thursday, and is in the process of identifying data collection instruments that would generate comparable data to enable programs to learn from each other and to improve. With a small staff based in Austin, Texas, the organization has received start-up funding from a couple of foundations.

George Noblit book published

George Noblit is an editor, along with William Pink of Marquette University, of the new book – “Education, Equity, Economy: Crafting A New Intersection.” The book, published by Springer, is the first volume in a new series that examines the intersections of education, economy and equity. It includes a variety of essays that suggest ways forward to a less stratified and exploitive world. Details here.

Doctoral student Tommy Ender accepted into Future Faculty Fellowship Program

Tommy Ender, a doctoral student in cultural studies and literacies, has been accepted into Carolina’s Future Faculty Fellowship Program. The program, housed in the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence, is a semester-long program that introduces graduate students to best teaching practices and introduces them to the roles and responsibilities of faculty members at different types of institutions. Ender will participate in the spring.

Publications and Presentations

Fen English gave two presentations last week at the Australian Association of Research in Education in Fremantle, Australia, on aspects of educational leadership, the first on leadership connoisseurship and the second on the state of the field.

Ariel Tichnor-Wagner, Justin D. Garwood, Mary Bratsch-Hines and Lynne Vernon-Feagans had the article “Home Literacy Environments and Foundational Literacy Skills for Struggling and Nonstruggling Readers in Rural Early Elementary Schools” published in the journal Learning Disabilities Research & Practice, 1 Dec 2015.
