‘Hot topics’ in education research focus of Tuesday GSA brown bag talk

The Graduate Student Association will host its second GSA Brown Bag event of the year on Tuesday. The subject: “Hot Topics in Education Research.” Speakers include Sherick Hughes (Cultural Studies and Literacies), Thurston Domina (Policy, Leadership and School Improvement), Rebecca New (Teacher Education and Curriculum), and Cynthia Demetriou (Associate Dean and Director for Retention, Office of Undergraduate Retention). The talk begins at noon in Peabody 02.

Leigh Hall giving SOE Brown Bag talk Wednesday

Leigh Hall, associate professor of literacy studies, will provide an SOE Brown Bag talk on Wednesday entitled “Critical Digital Pedagogy.” The talk will examine what is Critical Digital Pedagogy and how it can be applied to teaching. The talk will explore the theoretical basis for CDP, as well as how digital practices, such as using Twitter, can be used to expand students' voices in our classrooms and allow for larger discussions beyond classroom walls. The talk begins at 12:30 p.m. in Peabody 02. Light lunches will be provided by the School of Education Foundation.

Fen English to give Education Policy Colloquium Series presentation Oct. 28

The Carolina Education Policy Student Association is hosting its Education Policy Colloquium Series, with Fen English, the R. Wendell Eaves Sr. Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership, making a presentation on Oct. 28. The talk is entitled “Rising to the Global Challenges to Educate All.” The talk, centered on a book English recently edited, examines an international effort to step outside the school-nation state nexus, and think and act in the best interests of humanity. The talk begins at noon in Peabody 02. Light refreshments will be served.

Lora Cohen-Vogel co-hosts national conference

Lora Cohen-Vogel, the Robena and Walter E. Hussman, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Policy and Education Reform, co-hosted earlier this month the second national conference on scale sponsored by the National Center for Scaling up Effective Schools. Invited speakers at the Nashville conference included Anthony Bryk of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, John Easton of the Spencer Foundation and former Director of the Institute of Education Sciences, Bill Penuel of the University of Colorado-Boulder and the Research+Practice Collaboratory, Mark Dynarski, former Director of the What Works Clearinghouse, and Vivian Tseng, VP of the W.T. Grant Foundation. Dr. Cohen-Vogel also gave a talk entitled “Opportunities and Dilemmas of Partnering for Continuous Improvement.”.

Alumna Leslie Locklear featured in Huffington Post story

Leslie Locklear (M.Ed. '14) was among those interviewed for a story on the Huffington Post website examining the outlook of young Native Americans. The article explored Native Americans’ experiences in schools and universities, including how their culture is depicted. Locklear was a Galassi-Brown Social Justice and Advocacy Award honoree at the School of Education. The article is here.

‘Reconnect and Recharge’ sessions launch later this month

Recent graduates of the teacher preparation, counseling and administration programs are invited to participate in an ongoing discussion series called “Reconnect and Recharge.” The sessions will take place in Chapel Hill on four Saturdays: Oct. 31, Jan. 23, March 12, and May 14 at the CCEE from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As a thank you for your participation, a $50 stipend per session will be given. Graduate Programs Open House scheduled for Nov. 21

The School of Education will host its Graduate Programs Open House on Saturday, Nov. 21, providing prospective graduate students an opportunity to learn about the school. The day-long event will include an overview of the school, an information fair featuring degree programs and student resources, sessions on applying to SOE graduate programs, a faculty research showcase and individual meetings with faculty members. Prospective students will also have opportunities to meet with current SOE graduate students.
