Keith Sawyer to give book reading on Tuesday

Keith Sawyer, the Morgan Distinguished Professor in Educational Innovations, will read from his latest book – “Zig Zag: The Surprising Path to Greater Creativity” – on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Bulls Head Bookshop in the Student Stores. “Zig Zag” describes a science-based method by which people can build their creative potential.

School of Education Alumni Awards Dinner Oct. 3

The School of Education’s annual Alumni Awards Dinner will be held Oct. 3 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. The school will honor alumni Cynthia Demetriou (Ph.D. ’13), Fred Crouch (M.A.T. ’71), Michael Ortiz (Ph.D. ’81), Lisa Chapman (Ed.D. ’07), Tracy Weeks (A.B.Ed. ’95). The Peabody Award, the School’s highest honor will be awarded to Dudley Flood and posthumously to Gene Causby. RSVP to Laurie Norman by Friday. More about the Alumni Awards Dinner may be found here.

RSVPs due for Dr. Carol Malloy Research Symposium being held Oct. 10

The Dr. Carol Malloy Research Symposium is being held Saturday, Oct. 10, and RSVPs are due to Laurie Norman. The daylong event will be held at the Rizzo Conference Center in Meadowmont, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The symposium will include a keynote address by Robert Berry, three paper sessions, a luncheon and a panel session, concluding with a reception at which Dean Bill McDiarmid and deans emeriti Don Stedman and Madeleine Grumet will speak. Two School of Education alumnae to be honored at University Day on Oct. 12

Two alumnae from the School of Education will be among the four recipients of Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards when Carolina celebrates University Day on Oct. 12. University Day will mark the 222nd birthday of UNC-Chapel Hill. The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. and be held in Memorial Hall. Among those being honored with Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards this year are Mona Carol Frederick (B.A.Ed. ’76) and Sarah Parker (B.A.Ed. ’69). Frederick is executive director of Vanderbilt University’s Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. Parker served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina for 13 years and as chief justice from 2006 until mandatory retirement in 2014. Also being honored is Betty Debnam Hunt, founder of “The Mini Page” newspaper insert for children. Hunt has collaborated with the School of Education to fund opportunities for graduate students to develop and publish lesson plans incorporating “Mini Page” content. Graduate student Michael Little named Royster Fellow

Michael Little, a Ph.D. student in the Policy, Leadership and School Improvement program, has been named a Royster Fellow by Carolina’s Graduate School. Little completed his undergraduate degree in public policy analysis and political science at Carolina. The Royster Society of Fellows offers support and a community of scholars for selected graduate students. Little is profiled by the program here.

Lora Cohen-Vogel hosts AERA Division L meeting

Lora Cohen-Vogel, vice-president elect and program chair for Division L of the American Educational Research Association, hosted nine leading scholars from across the nation on September 11-12 at Peabody Hall as they worked together to build the Division’s program for the 2016 annual meeting in Washington, D.C. They reviewed data from almost 1,500 reviews to select papers for invited sessions, paper discussions, roundtables, and poster sessions. Authors will receive notification from AERA about whether their proposals were accepted in early November.

Graduate Programs Open House scheduled for Nov. 21

The School of Education will host its Graduate Programs Open House on Saturday, Nov. 21, providing prospective graduate students an opportunity to learn about the school. The day-long event will include an overview of the school, an information fair featuring degree programs and student resources, sessions on applying to SOE graduate programs, a faculty research showcase and individual meetings with faculty members. Prospective students will also have opportunities to meet with current SOE graduate students.

PLS faculty invited to join DPI committee

Policy, Leadership and School Improvement faculty members Lora Cohen-Vogel, Thad Domina, and Eric Houck have been invited onto the External Stakeholders Committee of the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. The committee convenes at Duke and meets several times a year to discuss and advise on education data management, research and reporting in North Carolina. Issues taken up by the committee include, for example, the Early Childhood Integrated Data System and DPI’s work with the Regional Education Lab-Southeast.

Publications and presentations

Lora Cohen-Vogel her former student Christopher Harrison and practitioner partners in Broward County Public Schools authored a blog post on the importance of building educational innovations from evidence of local success. The blog was invited by the National Center for Research in Policy and Practice, hosted by Northwestern, Harvard, and the University of Colorado-Boulder, and builds on Cohen-Vogel’s work with the National Center for Scaling up Effective Schools. The post has been shared and re-tweeted widely by the Institute for Education Sciences, the WT Grant Foundation, and Stanford University since its publication earlier this month.
