In the media: Education Pioneers profiles doctoral student William Jackson

School of Education doctoral student William Jackson is the subject of a profile by Education Pioneers, an organization that works to help develop education leaders. Jackson, who is pursuing his Ph.D. in educational psychology, measurement and evaluation, is leading a nonprofit organization called Village of Wisdom that works with black families in Durham to help children develop self-confidence and positive identities to help them achieve in school. Jackson’s work is profiled in an article by Education Pioneers entitled “Why Every Education Leader in American Needs to Talk to William Jackson.” Jackson is an alumnus of Education Pioneers.

Alumna Zoe Locklear named provost at UNC-Pembroke

Zoe Woodell Locklear (M.Ed. ’79, Ph.D. ’89) has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Locklear has worked for more than 30 years in education, previously serving as dean of UNC-Pembroke’s School of Education. She had served as interim provost since April. She has also served on the North Carolina State Board of Education and as an associate superintendent for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. She has served on the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education’s Alumni Council.

First Education Policy Colloquium Series event on Sept. 10 to examine Common Core

The first SOE Education Policy Colloquium Series talk of the year will feature Morgan Polikoff of the University of Southern California in a presentation entitled “Lies, Damn Lies, and Alignment: Studying Instruction in the Common Core Era.” The talk will be held Sept. 10 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Peabody 02. Polikoff speaks widely about the Common Core. He’s also a former champion on the popular game show “Jeopardy!”

SOE Brown Bag on Sept. 16 to feature Gregory Cizek

Gregory Cizek, professor of educational measurement and evaluation, will present this year’s first SOE Brown Bag talk on Sept. 16. Cizek’s talk is entitled “The Concept of Validity in a Comprehensive Model of Defensible Testing Practice.” The presentation will offer a brief summary of current validity theory, demonstrates a critical flaw in the current conceptualization of validity, and provides a framework that both accommodates and differentiates validation of test score inferences and justification of test use in a comprehensive model of defensible testing practice. The talk begins at 12:30 p.m. in Peabody 02.

Graduate Programs Open House scheduled for Nov. 21

The School of Education will host its Graduate Programs Open House on Saturday, Nov. 21, providing prospective graduate students an opportunity to learn about the school. The day-long event will include an overview of the school, an information fair featuring degree programs and student resources, sessions on applying to SOE graduate programs, a faculty research showcase and individual meetings with faculty members. Prospective students will also have opportunities to meet with current SOE graduate students.
