Today is deadline for graduate student proposals for January symposium

Today is the deadline for proposals for the Graduate Student Association’s seventh biennial School of Education Research Symposium. The event, titled “The Changing Landscape of Education: Research, Policy and Practice,” will take place on Jan. 11. The event will be coordinated by and feature presentations by School of Education graduate students. Organizers are encouraging all graduate students to participate and to share their current or recent research. Proposals should include an abstract of 150-300 words, proposed title, and brief author self-introduction. For more information or to submit a proposal, please email

Andy Mink presents at University of West Indies

Andy Mink, executive director of LEARN NC, organized and led a multi-day institute for university-level faculty, archivists, and librarians at the University of West Indies recently. Working in partnership with the British National Archives and National Geographic Society, this series of hands-on workshop sessions introduced new interactive technologies and how they can impact the classroom and the collections. Special emphasis was given on the development of outreach models for the UWI campuses.

Eric Houck invited to judge student competition

Eric Houck, associate professor of educational leadership and policy, has been invited to serve as a judge in a student competition sponsored by N.C. State’s Institute for Emerging Issues. It’s the first year of the competition, called the SECU Emerging Issues Prize for Innovation. The competition has invited students at North Carolina colleges and universities to submit ideas in four issue areas for ways to help K-12 teachers. In the competition in which Houck will serve as a judge, students will offer new and innovative ways to develop revenue streams to address support schools and teachers. Winners will be announced during the Emerging Issues Forum in Raleigh in February. More details about the competition are here.

GSA holding Winter Social on Friday

The School’s Graduate Student Association is holding a Winter Social for graduate students and their significant others on Friday. The event will be held at Anne Bryan’s home (210 Hillcrest Circle). The GSA will provide food, with attendees encouraged to bring your favorite beverage. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. Those planning to attend should have RSVPed by Monday, and are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots.

Dec. 12 reception planned to celebrate ‘FirstSchool’ book

A reception will be held on Dec. 12 to celebrate the publication of a new book about the FirstSchool project. The book – "FirstSchool: Transforming PreK-3rd Grade for African American, Latino, and Low-Income Children" – was edited by Sharon Ritchie of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, with co-editor Laura Gutmann, a School of Education doctoral student. Others contributing to the book were graduate students Adam Holland ('13) and Sandra Garcia. The reception will be held at the Carolina Club, beginning at 4:30 p.m. People planning to attend may RSVP here.

Faculty-staff holiday party set for Dec. 13

The School of Education’s faculty-staff holiday party will be held on Friday, Dec. 13. The party will be held in the Upper Club of the Blue Zone in the east end of Kenan Stadium. It starts at 4:30 p.m. and will be catered by Rocky Top Catering. Parking will be plentiful on Stadium Drive or in the Ram’s Head deck. Please RSVP to Laurie Norman,, by Dec. 6.

Free yoga classes offered to faculty, staff and students this week
