Jeff Greene to present SOE Research Brown Bag talk on Wednesday

Jeff Greene will give the inaugural SOE Research Brown Bag talk of the year on Wednesday. His topic: "Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligences, and Multitasking: Persistent Myths and Misunderstandings in Education." The session will be held in Peabody 02 at noon. Light lunches will be provided for approximately 25 people at each of this year's Brown Bag talks. The lunches are made possible through the generous support of Malbert Smith (M.Ed. '77, Ph.D. '80) and Metametrics, Inc.

Junior faculty invited to apply for development awards

The University is accepting applications for Junior Faculty Development Awards. The awards, up to $7,500, are intended for permanent, full-time, salaried faculty members without tenure who will not have been proposed for tenure prior to the application deadline, Oct. 9. Early career tenure-track and fixed-term faculty members (including research assistant and associate professors, and clinical assistant and associate professors) may apply. Jeff Greene describes his research in WCOM podcast

Jeff Greene, associate professor of learning science and psychological studies and director of graduate and undergraduate research programs, was a guest on the community radio program "Talking about Learning." In the program, hosted by Sharar Link, Greene explains is research into the ways students think about their learning and the impact that has on their learning. Greene is the latest of several School of Education faculty members to be featured on the program. Other interviews may be found here.

UNC media mentions: TRI, Keith Sawyer

The Targeted Reading Intervention, developed by Lynne Vernon Feagans, was the subject of a news release published by UNC News Services. The release, available here, focused on new findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of the program in helping struggling readers. The latest findings are published in the new edition of the Journal of Educational Psychology, available here.

A piece about a new book by Keith Sawyer, the Morgan Distinguished Professor in Educational Innovations, was published on the UNC website, available here. It takes a look at the book "Zig Zag: The Surprising Path to Greater Creativity," and shares some of Sawyer's tips for sparking creativity.

FPG offering statistical methods workshop on Sept. 24

The Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute is holding a workshop for faculty, graduate students, researchers and others who want to learn more about statistical methods for analyzing longitudinal data. LEARN NC sponsoring webinar on K-5 Common Core math standards

LEARN NC will be holding a webinar to help K-5 teachers who are struggling with the transition to the Common Core State Standards in math. The session will be led by Kay Ringer (Ph.D. '13), who is now an assistant professor in the Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education Department at East Carolina University. Where are they now?

Katharine Robinson, an August graduate of the master's in education in the Early Childhood, Intervention and Literacy program, is working as assistant director for curriculum at World View: An International Program for Educators, here at UNC. Robinson has been at World View for five years and in this role for 16 months.

Kathryn Ohle, who graduated in May from the Ph.D. program in Early Childhood, Special Education and Literacy, is now an assistant professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
