Inaugural SAC Brown Bag features Sherick Hughes on Wednesday

The first School Advisory Council Brown Bag of the year will be held Wednesday, featuring Associate Professor Sherick Hughes talking about his work. The event will be held at noon in Peabody 02. Again this year, box lunches are being made possible through the generous support of Malbert Smith (M.Ed. ’77, Ph.D. ’80) and Metametrics, Inc.  Please bring your own drink.

Meanwhile, the schedule has been set for other SAC Brown Bags for the year, with all the events at noon in Room 02, except for the Nov. 28 talk. Mark your calendars with these dates:

GSA hosting Brown Bag on graduate student milestones Oct. 3

Director of Student Affairs Anne Bryan will lead a brief overview of the major components of graduate school programming at the School of Education during a GSA Brown Bag on Wednesday, Oct. 3. This meeting will be useful to graduate students who wish to double-check their understanding of processes such as the dissertation, coursework requirements and comprehensive exams.  Come with questions and your lunch. Watch for more information regarding the location.


Suzanne Gulledge making service-learning presentation tomorrow

Suzanne Gulledge, clinical professor of middle grades education, will be the featured speaker at the inaugural APPLES Service-Learning Program’s brown bag lunch presentation on Tuesday. In her talk, Gulledge will share effective models for community engagement as well as best practices for partnership in creating service-learning opportunities. Gulledge’s recent research has taken her to China and Tanzania to study youth development projects. She leads the education track in Carolina's Burch Program in Cape Town South Africa, which has a strong service learning component. The event will be held in the Upendo Lounge at the Student and Academic Services Building-North at noon. LEARN NC launching Twitter chats tomorrow

LEARN NC will host a Twitter chat on Tuesday, the first of planned monthly Twitter chats. In tomorrow’s event, LEARN NC Executive Director Andy Mink will lead a conversation on creating authentic hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for teachers and students. The chat will begin at 4:30 p.m. and last for an hour. Join the chat by using the hashtag #learnchat.


Kathleen Brown publishes journal article

Kathleen Brown, professor of educational leadership, was the lead author on the article “Leading Schools of Excellence and Equity: Documenting Effective Strategies in Closing Achievement Gaps,” published in Teachers College Record. The article examines how recognized “honor schools of excellence” are, or are not, promoting and supporting both academic excellence and systemic equity for all students. Co-authors of the article are all alumni of the School of Education’s Educational Leadership program: Jen Benkovitz, A.J. Muttillo and Thad Urban. LEARN NC publishes guide to mathematics Common Core State Standards

LEARN NC has published a new guide for elementary school teachers, administrators, and parents to help them navigate the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The guide explains key components of the Standards, identifies professional development opportunities for teachers working with the Standards, and supports parents in helping their children meet the Standards. The guide is available here.


GSA holding bake sale this week

The Graduate Student Association is holding a bake sale this week to raise money for local charities. The sale will be held in the graduate student lounge today through Thursday. Plan to stop by and purchase some treats to help local charities!
