Lora Cohen-Vogel presents in London, appointed to journal board

Lora Cohen-Vogel, Robena and Walter E. Hussman, Jr. Distinguished Associate Professor of Policy and Education Reform, made a presentation at the International Learning Conference in London on Aug. 15. The presentation, entitled “Understanding data use for school improvement in the U.S.,” draws on data collected as part of her IES-funded projects with the National Center on Scaling up Effective Schools.  Also, Cohen-Vogel has been appointed to the editorial board of Educational Researcher, the journal of the American Educational Research Association.


Jill Hamm, colleagues publish chapter, paper

Jill Hamm, associate professor of educational psychology, is lead author on one recently published paper and a co-author on another, along with doctoral student Abigail Farmer.  Hamm was lead author and Farmer a co-author on the chapter “Peer cultures of academic effort and achievement in adolescence: Why they matter, and what teachers can do about them” – contained in Peer Relationships and Adjustment at School, published by Information Age Publishers. Hamm was a co-author on a paper – “Bullying involvement and the school adjustment of rural students with and without disabilities” – published in the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. Other co-authors included Kerrylin Lambert of UNC’s Center for Developmental Science and doctoral student Maggie Gravelle. More information may be found here.


Juan Carrillo invited to present at Duke

Assistant Professor Juan Carrillo has been invited to speak at Duke University's Developmental Psychology Brown Bag Series on Nov. 11. The title of his talk is "Mexican-Origin Scholarship Boys: Achievement and the Politics of Loss."


Students: Sept. 15 deadline to waive, enroll insurance coverage

Students are reminded that Sept. 15 is the deadline to waive out or enroll for health insurance coverage. Health Insurance is mandatory for all eligible students at UNC – $709.00 remains on your University student tuition account unless you take an action to waive out. Need health insurance? Greensboro College gives award to alumna Nancy Farmer

Nancy Farmer (A.B.Ed.'69, M.Ed. '70, Ed.D. '81) has been awarded the Greensboro College Alumni Excellence Award. Farmer attended Greensboro College before receiving her degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill. She has been a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, consultant and associate superintendent, working with all levels of public schools and in the Department of Public Instruction and the U.S. Department of Defense Dependents Overseas Schools. In retirement, she has worked with low-wealth schools and led the Principal Executive Program for two years.
