Gary Shaffer, head of school social work, dies Sept. 4

Gary Shaffer, who joined UNC’s School of Social Work in 1986, died on Sept. 4 at age 62. He had battled colon cancer for several years.

Shaffer was head of the School Social Work Licensure program, which is part of the Master of Social Work program. In this role, he worked closely with the School of Education for many years, coordinating internship placements in schools for Master of Social Work students and facilitating their licensure through the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

He was known as “Dr. School Social Work” in North Carolina, according to Anna Scheyett, associate dean at the School of Social Work.

A memorial service for Shaffer will be held at the School of Social Work on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m.
