Dean Tom James accepts provost position at Teachers College, Columbia University

Tom James, dean of the School of Education since fall 2003, has accepted a position as provost of Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City. He also will serve as dean of the college and vice president for academic affairs. He will begin the new position July 1, 2007.

During his four years at UNC-Chapel Hill, Dean James increased research funding at the School of Education, generated more faculty research that was field-based in community and school settings, placed more of the School's teacher education programs in public schools, forged new ties with policymakers at the state and federal levels and developed strong collaborations with other areas of the University.

Teachers College is the largest graduate school of education in the nation. The editors of U.S. News & World Report have ranked Teachers College as the number one graduate school of education in the country.
