Anne Bryan joined the staff of the School of Education in October as the new director of student affairs. She oversees recruitment, admissions, registration, advising and financial aid for the School’s undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students.
With 10 years of experience in college student personnel work, Bryan is implementing a student-centered model at the School of Education. “We want to serve the whole student,” she said. Students use the office as a portal for a variety of purposes, such as seeking academic advisement or declaring a major.
Students also may come to the Student Affairs Office to talk about a problem or crisis. In that case, the staff will diagnose the crisis and support the student in addressing it. “We will get crisis personnel when needed, help identify campus resources and encourage the student to obtain those resources,” Bryan explained. Then the Student Affairs Office will follow up to be sure the student has resolved the crisis appropriately.
“We want our students to understand that our office, as well as other units on campus, offers resources to help them when something is not working,” Bryan said. “We want to help them succeed.”
Before coming to the School of Education, Bryan was assistant director of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Disability Services from 1998-2005. In her previous positions at UNC, she has worked with students in various capacities in the Department of Housing and Residential Education, Leadership Development Program, and Dean of Students Office.
In addition to her baccalaureate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, Bryan holds a master’s degree in counseling, with a concentration in college student personnel, from UNC-Charlotte.
