School of Education Earns Re-accreditation
Nov. 15, 2005
The School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has demonstrated its commitment to producing quality teachers for our state and nation’s children by achieving full accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the professional accrediting body responsible for establishing high quality teacher preparation and development. NCATE currently accredits 614 schools, colleges and departments of education. These institutions produce more than two-thirds of the nation’s new teacher graduates each year.
In order to become NCATE accredited, a school must meet rigorous performance-based standards. Among other factors, schools are evaluated on their resources, including information technology resources, the effectiveness of their teaching practices, the diversity of their curriculum and student population, and their partnerships with P-12 schools.
The School of Education was established at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1885. The School was first accredited in January 1954 – the founding year of NCATE ─ and received notification of its most recent re-accreditation on Nov. 15, 2005.
