James J. Gallagher Receives Enduring Contribution Award

James J. Gallagher, Kenan professor emeritus and former director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG), received the Gold Medal for Enduring Contribution by a Psychologist in the Public Interest, presented by the American Psychological Association at its annual convention in August 2005.  Gallagher was cited for his leadership in the growth of FPG into a nationally recognized center for research and technical assistance to young children and families.  His book, Educating Exceptional Children, which he co-authored with Nicholas Anastasiow, Mary Ruth Coleman and the late Samuel Kirk, has become a classic and is now in its eleventh edition.
