Thomas Benton (A.B.Ed. ’73, M.Ed. ‘82), retired after a 32-year career as a teacher and principal, has been selected to fill a vacancy on the Wake County school board.

Benton was chosen by the board on Tuesday (Feb. 5) to fill the vacancy left behind after member Chris Malone was elected to the state House of Representatives.

Benton is a retired principal who spent most of his career in Wake County. He started his career there as a teacher at Enloe High School in Raleigh in 1973, later serving as principal at Zebulon High School when it was converted to a middle school. He retired in 2005 while serving as principal of Durant Road Middle School.

Benton will hold the seat through the remainder of Malone’s term, which expires in November, The News & Observer reported. Benton has said he intends to run for the seat in October when it is on the ballot for a four-year term, the newspaper said.
