Callie Adkins Smith (A.B.Ed. '00) named regional Teacher of the Year
Feb. 4, 2011
Callie Smith, a first grade teacher at Bogue Sound Elementary School in Newport, has been named the Southeast Region’s Teacher of the Year. Smith, who is also a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, is one of nine teachers around the state to win a regional honor.
Smith was named the 2010-2011 Carteret County Public School System Teacher of the Year in May. She and one other teacher were then chosen as regional finalists. They were visited at their schools by a team of judges from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. The visits included classroom observations and interviews with school staff members and parents.
“Mrs. Smith’s selection as Southeast Region Teacher of the Year brings honor to Bogue Sound Elementary School, the county’s public school system and the entire county,” Superintendent Novey said in the news release.
Smith taught in Raleigh and Durham before joining Carteret County Schools in 2004. She majored in elementary education and biology at Carolina.
A story about Smith’s honor, published by ENCToday.com, is available on their website.
