Jessica Thompson (M.Ed. '02) named Elementary Counselor of the Year

Jessica Thompson, a school counselor at Millbrook Elementary Magnet School in Raleigh, has been named Elementary Counselor of the Year by the North Carolina School Counselor Association.
Thompson, who obtained her master’s of education in school counseling, has been praised for her ability to form relationships with all stakeholders. Her nominator said that she always has a sympathetic ear and a kind word.
She was also praised for her use of data to help produce higher student achievement. She helped her school receive Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) status. Also, as a result of Thompson’s efforts, student surveys demonstrate that bullying has decreased by 58 percent. Her “Why Try” program has reduced discipline referrals by 71 percent.
As part of her nomination, one parent said: “This [school] counselor allowed me to cry on her shoulder. She went above and beyond to help me with issues affecting my daughter not just at school, but in her life.”
A student said, “I know when I have problems I can always talk to her. To some students like me, Ms. Thompson is a good friend you can count on. She is the best counselor!”
