Latin teacher Amy Rechtiene (M.A.T. ’08) named Google Earth “Top Educator”

Amy Rechtiene, who teaches Latin at Lake Norman High School in Iredell-Statesville Schools, N.C., recently won a national 3D curriculum competition sponsored by Google Earth. She was one of three winners nationwide at the high school level.

The competition, open to all K-12 educators in the United States, challenged teachers to create a lesson plan that used the digital layer of Ancient Rome, a Google Earth feature found online. Rechtiene’s lesson, titled “A Tour of Rome Fit for an Emperor,” takes participants on a virtual three-day interactive tour of Ancient Rome with the Emperor Augustus.

Submissions were judged on educational value, creativity, clarity, organization and research, and the use of the ancient Rome 3D layer.

In addition to an engraved Google “Top Educator” plaque, Rechtiene received an Apple MacBook laptop, a digital classroom projector, a digital camera, a 3D navigation mouse and $500 in gift cards to Target.
