Amy Singer was recently selected as the 2008-09 Alamance-Burlington School System’s Counselor of the Year.  Singer works at South Graham Elementary School in Graham, N.C.

Since her arrival at SGES in 2005, Singer has initiated many programs aimed at connecting Latino families with the school.  Her ability to speak Spanish has allowed her to hold parent meetings in Spanish and to host a “Counselor’s Coffee,” which allows her to address parents’ concerns.

In 2008, Singer started a Career Day at SGES where 30 community members came to the school to speak about their careers with third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students.

“Most recently, Amy has focused her efforts on bringing elementary school counselors together within our school system who wish to share knowledge, ideas, resources and experiences. She created a group that meets once a month for peer supervision outside of our typical work environment,” said Adria E. Shipp, elementary school counselor at Sylvan Elementary School in Snow Camp, N.C. Shipp nominated Singer for the award.

In addition, Singer has led a campaign that reduced student absences and late arrivals by 50 percent.  She currently leads Red Ribbon Week and in the past has run the attendance awards, a canned foods drive and a Christmas fundraiser.

“Amy is first and foremost an advocate for herself, her students and for the school counseling profession,” said Shipp.

Singer is currently working through the extensive process of seeking National Board Certification, a recognition of highly accomplished educators who have met rigorous standards. The process is administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Prior to her time at SGES, Singer taught a high school English language course in Saga, Japan.
