Tricia Cotham (M.S.A. ’06) chosen to become North Carolina’s youngest legislator

Tricia Cotham, assistant principal at East Mecklenburg High School, has been chosen by Democratic Party officials in House District 100 to fill the N.C. House of Representatives seat vacated by former Speaker Jim Black. She received 23 of 32 votes, outpolling three other candidates.

Gov. Mike Easley is expected to appoint her to the position later this month, making the 28-year-old North Carolina’s youngest legislator.

A former social studies teacher, Cotham was named Charlotte-Mecklenburg Teacher of the Year in 2001 while teaching at Northeast Middle School. Two years later, she was named Mint Hill Teacher of the Year while teaching at Independence High School.

Cotham earned her Master of School Administration degree in 2006 from the School of Education. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
