Frank Comfort (M.A.T. ’69) retires, leaves behind winning record and SOE scholarship fund

Frank Comfort will retire June 30, 2007 after 30 years as head coach of the North Carolina swimming and diving team.

Comfort is the winningest coach in ACC history with 16 women's championships, 10 men's championships and 578 men’s and women’s career dual meet wins. He has won more dual meets than any other coach in college swimming history.

Comfort received his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, where he was a letterman swimmer.

He first came to UNC in 1968 to earn his Master of Arts in Teaching degree at the School of Education in physical education. While earning his degree from the School of Education, Comfort simultaneously coached the UNC freshman men’s swim team to an undefeated season.

He eventually left UNC to coach at Johns Hopkins University for nine seasons before returning to Chapel Hill in 1977.

As dedicated to academics as he is to athletics, Comfort established the Frank R. Comfort Scholarship Fund at the School of Education, which provides full tuition for an undergraduate student enrolled at the School. Since 2000, the award has been made annually to a student who exhibits distinguished academic achievement.
