Barbara Smith (M.Ed. '60) inducted into Longwood University Athletics Hall of Fame

Barbara B. Smith was inducted into the inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., on Nov. 27, 2005. She was head coach of the women’s golf program at Longwood for 26 years, from 1966-92.

During her tenure at Longwood, Smith guided the women’s golf program to three National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division II national championships, five national runner-up finishes and six Virginia state championships. 

Previously she was inducted into the NCGA Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the Limestone College Athletic Hall of Fame in Gaffney, S.C. 

She was twice named Coach of the Year by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), in 1989 and 1983.  She was named an LPGA Master Professional in 1994. 

Smith is now retired and teaching private golf lessons. In addition to her master’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, she holds an Ed.D. from UNC-Greensboro.
