Judith Meece’s research focuses on the role of schooling experiences in children’s development. Her specific areas of research include academic motivation in school contexts, gender differences in motivation and achievement and the schooling experiences of high-risk girls. Meece co-directed a National Science Foundation project examining the development of middle school students as mathematics learners and was recently awarded a Spencer Foundation grant to continue this research with adolescents making the transition to high school. She also collaborated with the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to develop an innovative educational program for female youth offenders. Meece publishes her research in professional journals such as Annual Review of Psychology, Contemporary Educational Psychology, Journal of Research on Science Teaching, Elementary School Journal and Journal of Educational Psychology.
