Barbara Day’s current research focuses on identifying what teachers want and need in order to be successful.  She compares interview results between National Board Certified teachers and non-National Board Certified teachers in a variety of disciplines including mathematics, early childhood and English. Her recent publications include “Giving Teachers a Voice,” published in The Record of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education in 2005.

In addition to research studies, Day has written textbooks that have been translated into several foreign languages. She authored Open Learning in Early Childhood Education (1975); Early Childhood Education: Creative Learning Activities (2nd edition, 1983); Early Childhood Education: Creative Learning Activities (3rd edition, 1988), and Early Childhood Education:  Developmental/Experiential Teaching & Learning (4th edition, 1885). With co-authors Sarah Hammond Leeper of the University of Maryland and Ralph L. Witherspoon of the University of South Carolina, Day co-authored Good Schools for Young Children (5th edition, 1994). She also co-authored Early Childhood Education: Curriculum Organization and Classroom Management in 1987 with Kay Drake of Elon University and developed an accompanying documentary film, which won the CINE Golden Eagle Award for excellence in documentary and informational film production.  

In addition, Day has edited volumes exploring national issues and advances in education. In 1995, she edited Education for the 21st Century ─ Key Issues: Leadership, Literacy, Legislation and Learning, published for the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. In 2000, she edited Teaching and Learning in the New Millennium, published by Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society.
