This study combines student and teacher survey responses with administrative student data to determine the association between the use of career-relevant instruction (CRI) as a pedagogical tool in core classes and a set of student outcomes. Initial findings from this longitudinal analysis of 2,612 students indicate that students who reported hearing career related examples from more of their teachers also reported much higher engagement in their school and performed better on end of grade exams—even after controlling for previous engagement.  Students of color especially benefited from this teacher strategy, resulting in a significant reduction in the racial achievement gap.
