“In this manuscript, the author discusses how teachers can understand, recognize, and respond to middle school students’ reading identities in ways that will allow them to become full participants in school, develop their comprehension abilities, and learn subject-matter content. She discusses the comprehension difficulties that most middle students contend with in school and how teachers can utilize principles related to identity development to respond to such difficulties. She examines how students’ conceptualizations of themselves as readers can influence their actions with texts and comprehension development. She concludes with specific suggestions for how teachers might respond to students’ reading identities through instruction.”
