Highlights: Examined development of student–teacher relationships for kindergarten and 1st graders. Boys and African American students had more conflicted relationships with teachers. Children's behavior mediated the effect of gender, but not effects of ethnicity. African American students and teachers had poorer relationships, regardless of behavior.
